about

Originally released on London’s Botchit & Scarper label in 1999, FreQ Nasty’s seminal debut album ‘FreQ’s Geeks & Mutilations’ (FGM) is back on the digital streets via the ‘Between The Silence’ imprint. A key album in the formative years of electronic dance music, FGM was launched out of the burgeoning ‘Nu Skool Breaks’ scene. Having a wide range of musical loves FreQ fused the 90’s breakbeat rave sound with the weight of DnB, the danceability of garage, the party vibes of UK hiphop, along with healthy portions of jazz, 70’s German electro, and even spoken word, all the while still maintaining a unique and cohesive sound. On vocal duties, he is joined by now legendary DnB MC Skibadee, UK hiphop MC and MOBO award winner Phoebe One, French neo-soul singer Amaziree (covering KISS’s ‘I was made for loving you’ of all things!), and French model turned spoken word activist Akure Wall. The album is peppered with retro science fiction samples as famously featured in the lead single ‘Boomin Back Atcha’ featuring Phoebe One which went on to become a crossover radio hit for FreQ and Phoebe around the world. Fans will note that the classic artwork featuring FreQ painted into over-the-top science fiction comic art from the 50’s and 60’s still looks great and it remains unchanged for this re-release. An impressive debut album, ‘FreQ’s, Geeks, and Mutilations’ represented an important step forward for electronic music in 1999, and it still sounds great today offering a masterclass in multi-genre experimentation and cohesion 20 years on from its original release.
